Join us at the Star Theatre for a special Sweetheart Swing Dance, featuring the Minidoka Swing Band.

One week before the 70th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, this dance commemorates the joy of Nikkei life before internment while also encouraging the intergenerational passing of traditions.

This event will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a half an hour lesson in some basic swing dance moves. At 7:30, the Minidoka Swing Band will take the stage and lead attendees in some of the best swing music until 10:00, just in time to give concertgoers a chance to refuel in the many restaurants and bars in Old Town and the nearby Pearl District.

  • Saturday evening, February 14, 2009 - Pacific NW Buddhist Convention - Double Tree Motel, Portland, OR - 2 hr. dance. (350 attendees)
  • Saturday, March 28, 2009 - Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center - KODOMO NO TAME NI (For the Sake of the Children). Storyteller Alton Takiyama-Chung uses history-based stories and musical accompaniment by Mike Van Liew to bring to life the complex Japanese-American WWII experience. Also on stage will be traditional koto player Yukiko Vossen. Special guest appearance by the Minidoka Swing Band.

  • Saturday, September 5, 2009 - ONE (Oregon Nikkei Endowment) Street Dance and competition - 1 to 2:30pm- China Town, Portland, OR. Dance contest Organizers: Syncopated Rhythms.

  • Saturday, April 10, 2010 - Methodist Church Conference - at the Refectory Restaurant, Portland, OR.
  • Friday, July 30, 2010 - Twenty year Anniversary and Re-dedication of the Japanese American Historical Plaza, Portland, OR. Party at the Bill Naito Legacy Fountain downtown Portland, after the re-dedication with the Minidoka Swing Band. Dedications begins at 5pm, Portland Taiko play and 6pm and the Minidoka Swing band plays at 6:30pm. ( 500 attendees)
  • Sunday, September 5, 2010 - Dedication of Japanese American Memorial Wall, Seattle Washington. Band will play at 1:30 pm, Dedication starts at 2:00 pm and then the band will play for an hour after the dedication. Location: Nissei Veterans Hall at 12th Avenue South and South Jackson St. in Seattle. (1500 attendees)

  • Saturday, February 19, 2011 - "An Intimate Dinner with George Takei." A benefit for Oregon Nikkei Endowment. Fighting for Civil Rights: THE JAPANESE AMERICAN and LGBTQ EXPERIENCE.

  • Saturday, March 12, 2011 - Washougal HS Japanese/Community Japanese Festival in Washougal, WA.  Festival time is 2:00pm until 7:00pm. The Minidoka Swing Band will perform from3-4pm.
  • Friday, April 1, 2011 - The Minidoka Swing Band, Willamette University in Salem, OR. *12:00pm - Private Nikei luncheon with Nisei Families & invited guests. Open to the Public:  * 1:30pm - Dedication of permanent bench and commemorative display outside in Jackson Plaza.  **2:30pm - Concert Featuring Minidoka Swing Band and former Poet Laureate of Oregon, Lawson Inada at the Rogers Music Center.
  • May 15, 2011 - Robbie Remembrance: 1 year later - This May will mark the first year of the loss of a mentor, visionary, leader, and great friend to all, Robbie Tsuboi. In tribute to all Robbie has done for us the Minidoka Swing Band, Hula Pa Makani Kolonahe, Friends of Goose Hollow (Goosers), and Unite People will be having a memorial celebration on Sunday, May 15 at Epworth Methodist Church, 1333 SE 27th Ave. The event will be about Robbie’s two favorite tenets, food and fun. The event will begin with a potluck lunch (main dish will be provided, side dishes are welcome) at 11:30 am and followed by a program in the sanctuary at 1:30 pm.   • September 24, 2011 - Washington County Museum - Bring the family, a picnic lunch and enjoy an outdoor concert by the Minidoka Swing Band from 12 noon to 2:30 PM. The Museum will feature an exhibit which is on loan from the Nikkei Legacy Center entitled "Taken: FBI" and paintings by Sharon Inahara. Admission to the Museum will be FREE on this day.
  • December 4, 2011 - Avamere at Hillsboro - Come hear our new Christmas tunes along with some traditional swing tunes and start out the Christmas Season right, 1-3 PM, 2000 SE 30th Ave, Hillsboro, OR.  Open to the public, no admission charged.
